Subject
Ice coring
Description
Three men presenting ice core samples from Greenland to Army leaders at the Pentagon. Original caption says, "Leaders of a team of Army scientists who have drilled through nearly a mile of the polar ice cap display samples of ice cores at the Pentagon Tuesday. From left are B. Lyle Hansen, who heads the program; Dr. Chester C. Langway Jr. and Dr. Jay T. Thomas. They said the ice core at left is from a depth of about 4,562 feet, about 10,000 years old. The one at right came from 1,800 feet down and was formed about 2,000 years ago about the time Christ was born. They hope to discover much about the world's past from their experiments." This publicity event was written up in the New York Times.
